"The Golden Rule of Habit Change: You can't extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it.” - Charles Duhigg, 'The Power of Habit
As a professional deeply immersed in the dynamics of management and entrepreneurship, the demands of the day often stretch into the night, blurring the lines between work and rest. This is a candid look at my journey in reshaping one of the most fundamental yet underrated aspects of life - sleep.
Unwinding or Unraveling? Navigating the pressures of a day in the world of management often leads me to unwind on social media. But what starts as a half-hour digital decompression often turns into hours, eating into precious sleep time. This habitual cycle of late-night scrolling and compromised sleep starts affecting not just rest but also work productivity.
A Conscious Shift Realizing that the allure of social media was a key factor in my disrupted sleep pattern, I introduced a simple yet effective change: an app-based restriction on social media use after 11 pm. I installed an app which restricts other social apps on my phone after 11 pm, which tells my subconscious mind that there is no option to use the apps.
Observing the Change The initial days felt challenging, but the mind is adaptable. Soon, this new restriction started to reshape my nighttime routine. The once habitual scrolling gave way to earlier bedtimes and, subsequently, better sleep.
The Ripple Effect This singular change had a profound impact. Improved sleep quality led to more refreshed mornings and increased focus during work hours. Productivity and mental clarity improved, underscoring the intertwined relationship between rest and professional performance.
Concluding Thoughts This personal journey highlights the subtle yet powerful impact of habit reformation. It's a reminder of how setting boundaries in our digital interactions can lead to significant improvements in both personal well-being and professional efficacy.
